Whenever I design a pick I want to try and do something that hasn’t been done before. That’s a huge challenge given the plectrum’s 100 year+ history and the sheer number of makers, approaches and materials in its past. When Brian came to me and asked me to design a model for him in his signature Tagua I was flattered, excited and trepidatious – what could I do that would fit in with his line, represent my own style, actually work and be repeatable?
The Starling came from a series of designs that I had revisited a number of times. One of the most challenging picks for me to make by hand it had to be quick, neat and elegant. The initial version was much larger as I was worried about making it too small. Between us we made it exactly right for the vast majority of players.
